Wrexham Veggies

Free Food Fayre

22nd July 2006

What a fantastic, uplifting day! Over 400 people came to enjoy the free vegan food on offer at the Wrexham Veggies Free Food Fayre on 22nd July. The event was the first to be organised by the recently formed campaigning group, Wrexham Veggies. It was obvious the day was going to be a success as soon as the doors opened at 11am and people immediately started flooding in. There was no let up in the flow of people until we closed the doors at 4pm, having exhausted our supplies of pretty much everything.

Generous donations by suppliers of veggie food (Plamil, Redwoods, Frys, Scheese and Zedz) were added to lots of fresh home cooked dishes to ensure there was a huge variety of different types of tasty, 100% animal free nosh. Some of the most popular dishes were the rice and pasta salads, veggie chilli, tofu and nut quiches, ice cream, cheesecakes, Zedz fantastic fruit cake and Plamil's delicious mint chocolates. All of the meat substitute samples were also snapped up - Redwoods new chicken style pieces went down particularly well. Samples of lots of different types of vegan cheese were enthusiastically sampled by the public and long standing vegans alike - it's well worth checking out the range of different flavours produced by Scheese and Redwoods.

Feedback from the public was overwhelmingly positive, with typical comments on the returned questionnaires being 'Everything is lovely', 'All food was good and tasty' and 'I liked everything', and you can't say much better than that! Most importantly there were lots of questionnaires returned by people who said they are intending to reduce or remove animal products from their diets as a result of visiting the fayre. Dozens of recipe booklets and guides to going veggie and vegan were also taken from the information stall.

We would encourage anyone who is wondering whether to do a veggie food fayre to just do it. A small group of people can achieve a huge amount. A core group of just a few people organised the fayre, helped on the day by half a dozen others (thanks to all who came to help for all your hard work!). As a result of the fayre we are now in contact with dozens of other local veggies and vegans interested in joining our group. We managed to get good local media coverage, allowing us to put the arguments for cruelty free diets to a wide audience. Many people have visited our website, so we intend to make this a source of recipes and information to support those intending to go veggie or vegan.
